This excerpt shows 2-channel video installation A BODY (2022) the first creative collaboration between Sarah Friedland and Eiko Otake.

The piece was installed at the entrance of Otake's larger exhibition I INVITED MYSELF VOL. 1 that occupied the entire gallery of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. This was the first image that visitors to the exhibition encountered before they move to the maze of 31 projected images.

Friedland also helped Eiko to conceive the whole exhibition and advised co-curators Elise Marie Butterfield and Eiko.

Filmed by Ruby Que during an hour long performance tour. Otake's body interacted with the projected images of her own body, captured several days prior.

The original 2-channel video installation A BODY is 20 minutes in length and shows Otake performing in an unadorned galley as a way to explore and learn about the place. Friedland's camera observes Otake's body as she begins to inhabit the gallery landscape, witnessing her labor.

The filming process was an improvisational duet. Both a camera person and a performer think while they move.
