Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean invited Eiko to present an iteration of A Body in Fukushima as part of their performance series A Journey, curated by Léon Kruijswijk, Performance Curator at Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, assisted by Nicole Wittmann, Assistant Curator of Performance.
The performance took place concurrently with Mudam's exhibition Kaihō: Japanese Women Artists after 1945, which surveys the work of thirtynine women artists from Japan who contributed to the global artistic landscape from the post-war period to the turn of the twenty-first century.
This was Eiko's first time performing in Luxembourg. Eiko wanted to bring the memories of Fukushima nuclear disaster that happened 15 years ago but is still not resolved. Offering her body as a conduit between Fukushima and elsewhere, Eiko wishes to challenge and change the viewers’ sense of distance to the major catastrophes of our time.
